A soapbox

I've had some strong feelings lately about something that every one of us uses, whether it's a lot or in moderation...it's the television. I've just had a lot of festering feelings about television lately. It all started when I was flipping through channels and on a whim stopped on a station where 4 women were sitting around the table at a restaurant talking. This is a show that I've never watched and the title alone disgusts me but for some stupid reason I didn't turn it right away like I probably should have. One of the girls was talking about wanting to get pregnant and she was having a hard time conceiving. Then another girl at the table tells her that she is pregnant and lets her know that she's going to have an abortion, and the girl wanting a baby storms off. The 3 left over then discuss how many abortions each of them had had. They talked about it like it was a procedure like getting your blood pressure taken, no big deal. I seriously wanted to vomit. I can't believe how lightly they can talk about a child that they just "got rid of" because they just had casual sex with someone that they never saw again. Okay done with that one, on to the next...

I'm really tired of 75% of all advertisements using sex to sell their products. Seriously! An Arby's add? I really like Arby's but it makes me really angry that they think that they need to use sex to sell their products. It seems like most adds anymore have some sort of sexual reference. I get really embarrassed when I'm sitting with my parents watching TV and add some on for Viagra or lubricants (sorry for saying embarrassing words and I know I'm 26 and married but still...) when we are watching a main TV station. It really makes me question whether I will let my kids watch TV, because if it's that bad now, what will be like in 5-10 years? And Primetime TV has gotten so bad! The commercials for them alone make me sick. I don't understand how people find it entertaining to watch people mock something so sacred.

Anyway, sorry to use this as my own personal soap box (and for using embarrassing words) but I do feel better getting it out. :)

I am so with you!! And I totally know what Arby's commercial you are talking about. It makes me so mad! I decided I'm just going to invest in a few really good TV show's on DVD that I liked when I was little and have my kids watch those.

Yep I'm with you too. I was disgusted when I first saw that Arby's commercial. It's the same with movies. It's getting worse.

Like everybody else, I know just exactly which Arby's ad you're talking about and I was shocked and somewhat offended by it.

Mostly we just record the shows we watch and skip the commercials or just watch them online the next day.

Still, prime time tv would have been PG-13 20 years ago...

I totally agree. James and I don't even have a tv and I think we will keep it that way. We watch our movies on the computer and that is good enough. By the way... how are you? We haven't talked forever. Hope all is going well. Next time you are up this way let me know and we should do lunch or dinner or something.
